Water safety


Follow these simple safety rules and enjoy a great day on the region's rivers and waterways.
Swim safe
- Always swim at places patrolled by lifesavers.
- Swim between the red and yellow flags.
- Read and obey all warning signs.
- If you are unsure of conditions ask a lifesaver and always check the depth.
- Children should be supervised at all times.
- Don't swim under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
- If you get into trouble, stay calm. Signal for help, float, go with the current and wait for assistance.
- Be aware - water conditions change quickly. Look for currents, holes, shelves, sloping away and depth changes.
- Do not attempt to swim across the river unless you are a strong swimmer and have checked the river.
Boat safe
- Carry safety equipment, including personal flotation devices.
- Get a weather forecast and listen for updates.
- Carry sufficient fuel and water.
- Drink, drunk... You're Sunk. Keep under .05, better still don't drink alcohol and get into boats.
- Capacity plates are compulsory.
- When going offshore, log in with your local radio base.
- When skiing keep well clear of swimmers and obstructions.
